When it comes to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, timing is everything

The holiday shopping season no longer runs on a single weekend. In fact, more than half of consumers now start their holiday shopping by October. That means brands need to plan a longer, more deliberate calendar.

To understand how top brands are timing their creator campaigns this holiday season, we surveyed nearly 120 marketers across our community of creator marketing professionals. Here’s what the data says about when to brief creators, post, and promote.

Consumers are shopping earlier than ever

The holiday timeline has stretched, and shoppers are leading the charge. 51% of shoppers plan to start their holiday shopping sooner than usual this year, some as early as the summer, and a growing share are knocking out gifts well before the first BFCM email hits their inbox.

But there's a nuance to their shopping behavior. While consumers are browsing early, they’re holding off on their biggest purchases until the major BFCM deals. In other words, they spend the fall researching, comparing, and building wish lists, then convert once the promotions hit. That means brands need to be present early to shape consideration, but promotional later to capture the sale.

Marketers are planning earlier to keep up

Brands are moving their calendars up to match shopping behavior. According to our survey, 58% of marketers now brief and onboard their creators by the end of September, and 24% start in August or sooner. Only 7% wait until November.

The urgency comes down to two forces: creator availability and cost. Q4 is the busiest stretch of the year for creators, and influencer spending spikes across the board in the fourth quarter as brands compete for the same limited inventory of proven partners. The best creators book out first, often with exclusivity clauses attached, and their rates climb as demand peaks.

There's a relationship benefit to moving early, too. Consumers typically need to encounter a brand message at least 7 times before they act on it, so a single one-off post rarely moves anyone through the funnel. Locking creators in early gives you room to run multiple touchpoints with the same trusted faces, which builds recognition and trust in a way a last-minute activation can’t.

This holiday season, lock in your creator cohort early to beat the competition, secure better rates before the seasonal surge, and give yourself enough runway to onboard creators, ship product, and plan a multi-post arc rather than a single drop.

But content rolls out later

Planning early is not the same as posting early. Last year, brands that pushed creator content live too soon watched excitement peak well before the sale, leaving audiences fatigued by the time BFCM weekend arrived.

That’s why most brands hold their creator content until closer to the sale, with 61% of marketers having creators start posting about BFCM promotions in November, including 16% going live the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday itself.

This cadence aligns with how shoppers behave. Since consumers research early but buy on promotion, your October content should do the consideration work (building awareness and desire) while your November content does the conversion work (landing the offer at the moment intent peaks). Front-load your best discount too soon and you spend it on shoppers who weren't ready to buy. Hold it until the window when they are, and the same creative works far harder.
